Diesel Generator And Its Maintenance.

Diesel Generator

Diesel Generator

The principal source of electric energy is the generator, a device for changing mechanical energy of motion into electrical energy. This energy conversion takes place by the action of magnetic forces. A rotating machine that uses mechanical energy and produces electrical energy is called a generator. In most of the industrial generators a diesel engine is used to rotate the shaft of an alternator. When coils are rotated in a stationery magnetic field, an alternating current is generated in the coil. Routine maintenance of generators should be carried out as per the maintenance schedule or the instruments contained in

the manufacturer's manual. The Mobil oil, air filters etc. should be changed accordingly.

RUNNING MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE OF A DIESEL ENGINE:

1. DAILY

a. Check the lubricating oil level in the Sump. Top up if necessary.
b. Keep the Fuel Tank full. The tank should be filled in completely with clean High
Speed Diesel Oil at the end of the day's work.
c. Clean the Engine at the end of the day's work. If there are any leakages stop
them by tightening the fasteners.

1. EVERY 50 HOURS (WEEKLY).

1Clean Oil-Bath Air Cleaner in fuel oil and refill with fresh lubricating oil, upto the
mark.
2IN DUSTY CONDITIONS CLEANING SHOULD BE DONE MORE
FREQUENTLY.

1. EVERY 100 HOURS (FORTNIGHTLY).

a. Check all Bolts and Nuts.
b. Make sure that the vent hole in the Fuel Tank Cap is clear.
c. Drain the Sump, flush out with approved

brand or flushing oil and refill with new
Lubricating oil of correct grade.
d. Clean the Lub. Oil, Filter and Strainer.
e. Remove the Cowlings and clean spaces between the fins.

1. EVERY 500 HOURS.

a. Thoroughly clean out the Fuel Tank.
b. Change the Fuel Filter Element. c. Knock out soot from the Exhaust Silencer.
d. Check the Valve Clearance.

1. EVERY 1000 HOURS.

a. Remove the Injector and test the spray.
b. Remove the Cylinder Head and decarbonize.
c. Examine and if necessary, grind in the inlet and exhaust valves.

1. EVERY 2000 HOURS.

a. Wash and clean all lubricating oil passages.
b. Examine the Main and Large End Crankshaft Bearings, and the Camshaft
Bearings. Replace if necessary. Check the Journals and the Crank Pin.
Regrind if necessary.
c. Check up all he clearances and take necessary steps to maintain them within
specified limits.
d. Check up the Fuel Injection Pump.
e. Set Injector at the correct Fuel Injection Pressure. Replace the Nozzle if
necessary.
